The Damascus College community in Ballarat extend condolences to the Slatter family on the passing of Lance. Lance and Colleen’s support of others echoed through Bill to the benefit of this community and we extend our thoughts and prayers to you all at this time.
Lance was a true gentleman and I have many fond memories on time spent with him on the family farm on Cutherberts road outside Ballarat. One of my favourite stories involved Mr Slatter (Lance), Bill and myself. We had spent the day carting hay and were on the last paddock, it was too rough for the elevator and had to be done by hand, luckily it was also the smallest. We were on our way back to the shed with a full load, Mr Slatter sitting proudly on top of the load, Bill and I on the tractor. Bill saw a culvert ahead and said to me, do you have the energy to to reload the trailer because if we hit this just right the load will split and Dad(Lance) will come bounding down on his bum. We went for it and it all went to plan, Lance was cursing and accusing us of doing it on purpose, we smiled and said no way using the need to reload as our excuse. I was always made to feel welcome and carry many more fond memories. My deepest sympathies to all the family.

Lance joined the Victoria Police Force in December 1955 and was a Member of Squad 10 and obtained a very high standard in the Police Depot obtaining first place in the squad. I was in the same Squad Lance and I believe we were the two eldest in the Squad. He was a very good Member and easy to work alongside during our three months in training. We met again some 11 months later when doing further exams making sure we were fit and proper persons to be Police Members. I lost touch with Lance after leaving the depot and going my own way. I would not know if Lance obtained promotion. My good wishes go to the Slatter family. Lance was four years older than myself.
