Joyce was my Grandmother and she was a big part of my childhood. My sister and I stayed in Barham with her and my Grandfather (Jim) during school holidays, and Nanna Joyce would often come and stay with us in Moama. Nanna Joyce was always a lot of fun and she enjoyed life’s little luxuries, which she often shared with us. I remember her getting her hair done at the salon every Friday, and she’d shout us a Golden GayTime ice cream while we waited. She bought us Twisties and Kit Kats and let us watch the Muppet Movie in her and Jim’s Jason Recliners. There was always a tin of expensive sugar-coated Fruit Pastels on the side table between the recliners (Jim’s favourites) and Nanna would let us have one while we watched TV. She made us Lemon Meringue Pie and treated us to Chinese Take-Away and took us to The Club for Prawn Cocktails in the Ballroom. One time my sister couldn’t eat all the prawns so Nanna wrapped them in a serviette and put them in her handbag. Six months later Nanna found the prawns in her handbag and the smell was horrendous. We all had a good laugh about that, many times over the years. Most of all, I’ll remember Nanna for all the stories she used to tell about growing up on a poultry farm in Koondrook, with her sister, Una, and what life was like in Barham when she first met and married Jim. She had so many friends and was very connected to her large family. She liked to keep up with what everyone was doing. It would be fair to say she loved a good bit of gossip and she liked to talk. She told stories with great flair and always added a bit of drama. She often made us laugh with a colourful turn-of-phrase. I was always amazed by her stamina and her appearance. She was strong and resilient and always spoke her mind. She always looked and smelled good. She always put her best foot forward. I learned a lot from her about telling stories and how to live a good life. Thank you to my Mum (Judy) and my Uncle (Chris) for all the love and care they’ve shown to Nanna over the past few years, especially since Jim died, and thanks to the staff and residents of Murray Haven for the care and friendship they shared with Nanna over the past 2 years. My husband (Nathan) and I can’t be at Nanna’s funeral as we are overseas, but we send our love to all of the O’Neill family (especially to my cousins) and to Nanna’s many friends at this sad time. Rest in peace Nanna, and say hi to Jim for us.
Lots of love, Dion Teasdale.
