I wrote this for you my Uncle Max.
Well I’m going
Amidst the willows and gums is where you’ll find me sleeping now
At peace and dreaming with no farrow on brow
Sky’s are blue, herringbone clouds are white
Where a gentle warm breeze blows across me, on my journey to light.
Well I’m going
Where rushing rivers bend and turn quenching land as it passes
Reminding me of each year of my life and how quickly it passes
Bringing life whilst the water is there
Drought and despair when the river bank is bare
The comings and goings The stagnant and flowing.
Well I’m going
Where soils are rich and high yields they bring
Beauty and joy grow from the simplest things
The seasons in life are for planting in time
Using the skills you are taught and the tools you may find
I have tilled the fields of my life, loving the crop that has grown
Knowing that in the end there is nothing I will own.
Well I’m going
They are saying it’s time for me to go. For my fields have no rows left to hoe.
I still have one parting seed for you, your soul is all you take with you.
Nourish and feed it because you will need it.
Will always have a poem and a song in my thoughts. See you later. Dave.
Dear Dad,
As I sit and ponder after watching your funeral, Im saddened for the little girl and boy who has lost their Daddy. I know as adults we did not always see eye to eye but we are forever grateful for the fantastic memories we have as kids. Myself and Laurence truly believe that we got to share the best years of your life whilst we were growing up.
Going to the doggies and watching those you trained race, dog shows, tomato picking, vegie patches and of course the cows. We will always remember how happy you looked when we would work on the family history, I enjoyed it so much its something I wish I had to continue your work and the stories. Seeing Laurence and the dogs run to the front door when the words; “Daddys home”, were said. Watching so many different musicals with you and listening to music on the record player. My love for country music comes from many a morning or afternoon listening with you. My favourite song we used to listen to was ‘Happiest Girl in the Whole USA’. Reading Banjo Patterson and of course; Dorothy MacKeller, “I love a sunburnt country, a land of sweeping plains. Of ragged mountain ranges, Of drought and flooding rains, I love her far horizons, I love her jewel sea, Her beauty and her Terror – The wide brown land for me” These are the memories we want to remember.
We did not make it on the day of your funeral but I am so grateful that myself and Laurence where together and for how we spent time remembering you. We attended your grave side on Thursday and held our own vigil for you. We are grateful for the opportunity to have been sent a copy of your service and that you found solitude in your final years.
Keep reaching for the stars, hope you get one and good night
Until we meet again, Goodbye Dad, Love Tanya and Laurence. xx
That’s beautiful
