Our deepest sympathy to Sally, Geoffrey and Steve and your families, Bette was an absolute pinnacle in our lives, her warmth and wonderful hospitality, keen interest in our family, and she was the epitome of the true Australian country woman. When I first met her, on a hot summers day in 1971, I was travelling with Mal English (later to become my husband), my brother and two of his friends from NZ. We were all dazzled by this gorgeous apparition in her kitchen where she made us most welcome. We Kiwis were overawed by the Victorian countryside. In later years, when my Father stayed with Bette and Geoff and Dad had left his shoes at Helen’s house in Whyceproof, Geoff flew Dad to pick them up. My Dad never forgot that wonderful daring event ! Dear Bette, I will miss our conversations, and your wonderfully informative Christmas letters. Rest well, a life lived to the full.
Dear Sal, Ed, Maddie, Claire, Jack, Geoff, Steve, Anna, & Lou
My deepest sympathy goes out to you all at this very sad time. Betty was the most beautiful lady. The first time I met her was helping at your wedding Sal & Ed, & she was absolutely sparkling that day, & so kind to all of us. Although I only saw her on occasions over the years, I did always love seeing her, she spread happiness. She was always bright & chirpy, intelligent, quick witted, kind, & interested in everyone she talked to. I remember the times I met her she always gave her full attention & remembered what I had been up to the last time we chatted. It was obvious how much she loved all her family & how much you all loved her. You will carry so many beautiful memories with you.
I would have loved to have been there today but have just watched the live stream instead & it was a beautiful service. Sal your eulogy was wonderful & she’d have been so proud. Also she’d have been looking down & loving your piano song Maddie & your poem Claire.
Lots of love to you all, Cate xxxxxxxx
